Headlight Restoration vs Lens Replacement vs New Headlight: Cost in Dubai and Abu Dhabi
19 September 2026Short answer: modern headlight lenses are made of polycarbonate protected by a thin factory UV coating. In the UAE and Oman, extreme UV (the UV index often reaches 11+ in summer), high heat and blowing sand wear that coating away. Once it is gone, the plastic oxidises and turns yellow and cloudy. On cars parked outside this often starts after 3 to 5 years.
What actually causes yellow, cloudy headlights?
- UV radiation: sunlight breaks down the hard coat and then the polycarbonate underneath. This is photo-oxidation, and it is what turns the lens yellow.
- Heat: summer temperatures above 45°C, plus heat from the bulbs, speed up the chemical ageing.
- Sand and dust: sandstorms and dusty roads act like fine sandpaper and leave micro-scratches that make the lens look hazy.
- Harsh cleaning: automatic car washes, strong chemicals and dry wiping scratch the surface further.
- Stone chips and small accidents: these crack the lens, which lets moisture and dust into the headlight.
Why yellow headlights are a problem
A yellow or cloudy lens scatters the light, so you see less of the road at night and other drivers get more glare. It also makes the car look older and lowers its resale value. Headlights that do not work properly can be a problem at vehicle inspection, and driving without working lights is a traffic offence in both the UAE and Oman.
How to fix yellow headlights: three options
- Polishing (restoration): cheap and quick, but it removes the damaged surface layer without restoring a proper factory UV coating, so in the Gulf climate the haze usually comes back within months.
- Replacing only the lens cover: you keep the original housing, projector and bulbs and fit a new clear polycarbonate lens with a fresh UV coating. It looks like a new headlight for a fraction of the price. This is the best option when the lens is deeply yellowed on the inside, pitted or cracked.
- Replacing the whole headlight assembly: only needed if the housing, reflector, electronics or mounting points are damaged. It is by far the most expensive option on premium cars.

How to keep your headlights clear for longer
- Park in the shade or under a car cover whenever you can.
- Apply a clear paint protection film (PPF) or a UV-protective ceramic coating to new or newly replaced lenses.
- Rinse off dust and sand with water before wiping. Never dry-wipe a dusty lens.
- Avoid strong solvents and abrasive brushes on the lens.
